December With the year drawing to a close, & most waiting on a 241 licence plate, plug-in vehicles were able to account for 70.7% of all new cars registered in December: 199 (57.7%) BEVs, &; 45 (13%) PHEVs. Used imports accounted for a further: 120 BEVs, &; 440 PHEVs. The top 3 most-registered BEVs in December were: Tesla Model Y Tesla Model 3 Kia EV6 2023 Overall, 2023 saw new plug-in vehicle registrations increasing to 27.2% of all new cars registered, comprised of: 22,789 (18.7%) BEVs, &; 10,382 (8.5%) PHEVs. This represents a 45.4% increase in the number of units of BEVs registered, & a 35.2% increase in the number of units of new PHEVs registered, versus their 2022 units (15,678 & 7,678 respectively). 2023 saw new BEVs climb to the third most registered “engine type”, besting non-plugin petrol hybrids. With only 4,212 units (an 18.5% difference) separating it from diesel there’s some reason to believe BEVs may move up to second most registered engine type by end of 2024. Used imports accounted for a further: 2,002 BEVs, &; 4,520 PHEVs. This indicates a significant, 315.4%, increase in the number of units of used BEVs imported, & a 44.6% increase in the number of units of PHEVs imported, versus 2022 (482 & 3,127 respectively). The end of year decline in registrations is well in effect, which sees plug-in vehicles accounting for an unusually high proportion of all new cars registered in November - almost half (46.5%). These were comprised of: 325 (35.4%) BEVs, and; 102 (11.1%) PHEVs. As we mentioned in September, it seemed likely that BEV registrations were on pace to overtake non-plug-in petrol hybrids registrations by year end & they’ve now done just that. Additional registrations from used imports in November accounted for a further: 153 BEVs, and; 459 PHEVs. Plug-in vehicles accounted for two fifths (39.7%) of all new cars registered in October, comprised of: 605 (27.8%) BEVs, and; 258 (11.9%) PHEVs. Additional registrations from used imports in October accounted for a further: 176 BEVs, and; 381 PHEVs. Clearly, it's that time of the year again where the volume of registrations start to drop off. An interesting data point at this time, with two months data still to come, is that there are now six vehicles whose registrations exceeded 1,000, compared to three is 2022, and two in 2021. Q1 - Q3 2023 Checking in on the year so far, for January - September 2023, plug-in vehicles accounted for 26.7% of all new cars registered in the period, comprised of: 21,705 (18.3%) BEVs, and; 9,989 (8.4%) PHEVs. BEV numbers are up 50% on the same period last year (14,510), while PHEV numbers are up 34% (from 7,438). Interestingly, non-plug-in petrol hybrids registrations for the period (22,059) only exceed BEVs by 354 - it seems likely that BEV registrations will overtake them by year end. Additional registrations from used imports during the period accounted for a further: 1,553 BEVs, and; 3,241 PHEVs.
