Green ‘Flash’ registration plates for Zero Emission Vehicles from 1 July 2025

Green ‘Flash’ registration plates for Zero Emission Vehicles from 1 July 2025

In November 2024 the Department of Transport announced green 'flash' registration plates will be introduced for zero emission vehicles. Following on from our recent contact with SIMI, we can confirm that this is to be introduced from the 1st July 2025.

Statutory Instruments have now been updated to allow for this green 'flash' to be a part of the license plate. The green flash plates will identify a vehicle as zero emission, though will not be mandatory - where displayed it will give zero emission vehicles a distinct identity on the roads, helping to promote the green transition on our roads. And yes, zero emission vehicles means zero exhaust emissions at all times, i.e. battery-only cars, motorbikes, vans, buses or trucks... not hybrids or plug-in hybrids.

Announcement details on the Green Flash can be found here, with initial details on sizing as below!
