Upcoming EVs in 2024

My electric vehicle journey began in 2014 when there were only four options available: the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Renault Zoe, and Renault Fluence. With such a wide selection, I decided to go with the Nissan Leaf. Fast forward to 2024, and we now have an incredible array of over 80 models in Ireland to choose from (source: nevo.ie). While not all of these models may be accessible in Ireland, the variety is greater than ever before, and we can expect even more choices in the coming year. Allow me to provide you with a comprehensive list of these exciting options.

BYD Seal

BYD has recently made its way into the Irish market with the introduction of the BYD Atto and BYD Dolphin. With aspirations to compete against Tesla, BYD is now going head to head with the Tesla Model 3 with their latest offering, the BYD Seal. Boasting sleek lines, a smooth drive, and the appeal of not being yet another SUV, the BYD Seal is an incredibly attractive car. And the whopping 500km range... ouch.

Citroen e-C3

Looking for an affordable EV? Look no further and anticipate the release of this remarkable model. Despite its small size, it promises a comfortable suspension in true Citroen-style. While compact, it offers plenty for most drivers. The elevated seating position provides an SUV-like feel without breaking the bank. With a range of approximately 250km from its 44kWh battery pack, this model is expected to hit the market at a price below €25k.

CUPRA Tavascan VZ

Who can resist the allure of the sleek and sporty CUPRA Born? Get ready for its larger SUV counterpart, which is set to make a grand entrance. Equipped with a powerful 77kWh battery, V2GH capabilities, an impressive efficiency rating of 179 wh/km, and a remarkable range of 430 km, there's so much to love about this new addition. Prepare to be captivated by its performance and style.

Ford Explorer

Ford made its debut in the Irish market a few years ago with the impressive Mustang E, but it didn't quite capture the attention of many buyers. However, Ford is not deterred and is now set to enter the EV segment with another iconic model name: the Ford Explorer. This electric SUV, based on the VW ID MEB platform, will carry the Ford Explorer badge and is expected to offer a range of approximately 420km. With this exciting addition, Ford is ready to make a bold statement in the world of electric vehicles. It is not as big as its US petrol counterpart, but it certainly looks its part.

Mini Cooper E

If the previous Mini Electric didn't meet your range requirements, the new Cooper E offers the perfect solution with two battery size options. You have the freedom to choose the range that truly suits your needs, and rest assured, it surpasses the capabilities of the current Mini Electric. Not only has the range improved, but the size has also undergone a transformation. With the Cooper and Countryman shifting sizes in opposite directions, it only means that there's now a perfect spot for a Mini in the middle.

Mini Countryman E

Mini has already made a mark in the electric vehicle market with their Mini Electric, which has been available for a few years now. As an owner myself, I can attest to the car's excellence and how much I loved it. While the range may not have been suitable for everyone, trading in my 24kWh Leaf for the Mini was a significant improvement. Now, Mini is expanding their range of fully electric vehicles by introducing the Countryman, which is a welcome addition. Built on the same platform as the BMW iX1, it has grown in size compared to the typical Mini, giving it a supersized feel. With a 64kWh battery and a range of 380km, it offers impressive performance. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any V2X options, but it will be available in an all-wheel-drive model as well.

Peugeot e-3008

Peugeot has made its mark in the EV market, starting with smaller range cars like the e208 and e2008. Now, they are venturing into the realm of larger siblings with the upcoming e3008. This model will be available in two battery sizes, with the largest option nearing 100kWh. With an impressive range of over 500km and an efficiency of 194Wh/km, the e3008 is set to make a statement. And that's not all - it's expected to come equipped with V2L capabilities. Merci, Peugeot, for pushing the boundaries of electric mobility!

Polestar 4

Polestar continues to push boundaries with their lineup of cutting-edge vehicles, and the highly anticipated Polestar 4 is set to make its debut in 2024. With a powerful 94kWh battery pack and an impressive efficiency rating of 202wh/km, this electric marvel will offer a remarkable range of 465km. Get ready to experience the future of driving with Polestar's innovative technology and stunning design.

Smart #3

Smart is making a bold move by stepping away from their small two-seater cars and venturing into the SUV market. Geely, the company behind Smart, is determined to make a mark in this competitive industry. Alongside their existing models, they will soon introduce the Smart #3 to the market, offering various battery and performance options, including the impressive Brabus edition. Equipped with a powerful 62kWh battery pack, this SUV will provide an impressive range of 355km.

Volkswagen ID.7

The Volkswagen ID.7 will be available in both sedan and wagon models, making it a welcome addition to the ID family. This is a great alternative for those who are looking for something other than an SUV. With an estimated range of about 520km WLTP and an efficiency of 165 wh/km, the ID.7 proves to be quite impressive. Additionally, with the latest software update, V2HG capability has been enabled on all models (except for the ID3) with 77kWh battery packs. If you're lucky enough to have one of these models, congratulations! You've just added a fantastic home battery to your driveway. Just make sure to pair it with the right charger, like the Wallbox Quasar 2.
